October River Flows

Posted by on Oct 17, 2011 in Edwards County, Featured, News, Real County | 0 comments

FLOW RATES   The rains have been a welcome relief and the river flows were considerably better this month than they have been the last several months.  However, we are by no means out of the drought but the area sure has greened up in a matter of days.  Cooler weather should be upon us soon and the trees and plants should be using less water. Let’s all hope and pray that we will continue to get rainfall. The Dam Crossing in the Nueces Canyon is looking better.  The Dam had a flow rate of 15,174 gpm (gallons per minute) back in April now it is down to 7,145 gpm (gallons per minute), but...

Texas AgriLife Extension said agriculture losses in the state due to this year’s drought have reached $5.2 billion and are now the costliest in state history for Texas farmers and ranchers. It’s been a year of superlatives for Texas: worst single-year drought, largest agricultural losses and most destructive wildfires — blazes that have damaged millions of acres and more than a thousand...

Drought threatens way of life for Texas ranchers

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The rolling pastures surrounding this West Texas city usually are green and verdant, chock-full of roving herds of sheep and cattle grazing on a seemingly endless supply of grass. These days, acre after acre is yellowed and inedible from a withering lack of rain. Wide patches are scorched black from where wildfires mauled them, and highway bridges span dry, empty riverbeds. There are few visible sheep or cattle, many having been sent to slaughter rather than being left to starve in the barren fields. “It’s just burnt up,” says Jim Hughes, 68, a local...

The tips that one group of Maryland farmers is offering can be useful for all of us who are interested in reducing water waste.
